KARDINALM\u00c4RKEN – V\u00c4DERSTRECKSM\u00c4RKEN \/ CARDINAL MARKS – LATITUDE MARKS <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ordet kardinal <\/em>kommer av latinets cardinalis,<\/em> vilket betyder viktigaste eller huvudsakliga. Ordet stammar fr\u00e5n cardo,<\/em>som betyder d\u00f6rrtapp, huvudpunkt, k\u00e4rna. Kardinal \u00e4r en titel i Romersk-katolska kyrkan f\u00f6r det n\u00e4st h\u00f6gsta \u00e4mbetet efter p\u00e5ven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kardinalm\u00e4rken \u00e4r sj\u00f6m\u00e4rken, i form av en boj eller prick, som m\u00e4rker ut hinder. De \u00e4r utsatta norr, \u00f6ster, s\u00f6der eller v\u00e4ster om ett hinder \u2013 till exempel ett grund. Kardinalm\u00e4rken anv\u00e4nds \u00e4ven f\u00f6r att markera gr\u00e4nsen f\u00f6r en farled. Det finns fyra sorters kardinalm\u00e4rken, ett f\u00f6r varje v\u00e4derstreck \u2013 d\u00e4rf\u00f6r kallas de ocks\u00e5 v\u00e4derstrecksm\u00e4rken. Numera s\u00e5 \u00e4r svenska kardinalm\u00e4rken gula och svara och med toppm\u00e4rken som visar vilket v\u00e4derstreck de m\u00e4rker ut. Du ska passera norr om ett nordm\u00e4rke och s\u00f6der om ett sydm\u00e4rke, v\u00e4ster om ett v\u00e4stm\u00e4rke och \u00f6ster om ett ostm\u00e4rke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word cardinal comes from the Latin cardinalis<\/u>, which means most important or main. The word comes from cardo<\/u>, which means door pin, main point, core. Cardinal is a title in the Roman Catholic Church for the second highest office after the Pope.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardinal marks are sea marks (navigation marks), in the form of a buoy or other floating or fixed structure, used in maritime pilotage to indicate the position of a hazard and the direction of safe water. Cardinal marks indicate the direction of safety as a cardinal (compass) direction (north, east, south or west) relative to the mark.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are exposed north, east, south or west of an obstacle – for example a foundation. Cardinal badges are also used to mark the boundary of a fairway. Cardinal directions are the four main points of a compass: north, south, east, and west. There are four types of cardinal marks, one for each latitude – hence they are also called latitude marks. Nowadays, Swedish cardinal badges are yellow and black and with top badges that show which latitude they mark. You will pass north of a north mark and south of a south mark, west of a west mark and east of a cheese mark!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sedan b\u00f6rjan av 1980-talet s\u00e5 \u00e4r svenska Kardinalm\u00e4rken gula och svarta. Innan dess s\u00e5 var de r\u00f6da och svarta och toppmarkeringarna bestod av b\u00e5de koner och klot.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When both cones point downwards, it is the southern mark you see. When they point upwards, it is the northern mark. On the East mark, the upper cone points upwards and the lower one downwards so that an Easter-egg shape is formed. If the cardinal mark you saw is not the south, north or East mark, you know it is the west mark! With a little good will, the vest mark also looks like a wine glass.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the 1980s, Swedish Cardinal Marks have been yellow and black. Before that, they were red and black and the top markings consisted of both cones and spheres.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En farleds sidor markeras av lateralm\u00e4rken, r\u00f6da eller gr\u00f6na prickar eller bojar som ofta men inte alltid har toppm\u00e4rken i olika former. N\u00e4r du styr i farledens riktning ska du ha de r\u00f6da lateralm\u00e4rkena p\u00e5 babordssidan (v\u00e4nster) och de gr\u00f6na p\u00e5 styrbordssidan (h\u00f6ger). N\u00e4r du styr mot riktningen blir det ist\u00e4llet tv\u00e4rtom. Det \u00e4r inte alltid l\u00e4tt att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 hur huvudriktningen f\u00f6r en farled har best\u00e4mts, men du kan \u00e5tminstone se den p\u00e5 sj\u00f6kortet. I svenska farvatten g\u00e5r huvudriktningen generellt moturs fr\u00e5n den norska till den finska gr\u00e4nsen och fr\u00e5n \u00f6ppet vatten mot hamn. Oavsett farledens riktning f\u00e5r du f\u00e4rdas \u00e5t vilket h\u00e5ll du vill i den. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBS! \u00c5ker du utanf\u00f6r Europa b\u00f6r du k\u00e4nna till att vissa l\u00e4nder har omv\u00e4nda f\u00e4rger \u2013 gr\u00f6nt p\u00e5 babord och r\u00f6tt p\u00e5 styrbord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The edge of a maritime channel, are indicated by lateral marks, red or green sea marks that often but not always have top marks in various shapes. When steering in the direction of the fairway, have the red lateral markings on the port side (left) and the green ones on the starboard side (right). When you steer in the opposite direction, it is the other way around. It is not always easy to understand how the main direction of a maritime channel has been determined, but you can at least see it on the sea chart. In Swedish waters, the main direction is generally counterclockwise from the Norwegian to the Finnish border and from open water towards the port. Regardless of the direction of the fairway, you can travel in any direction you want.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
